Bach
in Ice
The first-ever live cello performance inside a glacier cave: Bach’s Prelude, played on a cello made from flax fiber.
I made a profound connection with the natural world by letting it become part of the creative process. The glacier transformed my stage, my soundboard, and became my collaborator.
Cellist Joshua Nakazawa carried a flax fiber cello into a glacier cave to perform Bach’s Prelude live. Filmmakers Carlin Ma and Sam Paris captured the performance in one of the most fragile concert halls on earth. At FTI 2026, Ghent University rebuilt that cave as an installation, so you could hear it the way we did.
One brought the music. One brought the camera.

A cello grown from a Belgian field
The cello is made of flax fiber by Belgian luthier Tim Duerinck, developed with support from HoGent and Ghent University. It shrugs off the cold and humidity that would crack a wooden instrument.
